Camiko Smith, the Bermuda golfer, failed to clear the final qualifying hurdle for the US Open Championship at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, yesterday.

Teeing off in the 36-hole Sectional Qualifier on Woodmont Country Club’s North Course, Smith carded identical rounds of six-over-par 78 for a two-round total of 156, that left him well shy of what was required.

Smith, who finished tied 47th, made a reasonably good start to his qualifying bid after playing the opening nine holes in the first round at two over par.

But another bogey at the par-five 11th, and doubles at the 13th and 17th had him fall further off the pace.

Smith’s struggles on the back nine continued after teeing off the second round at the 10th where he carded the first of four bogeys that left him at ten over par for the tournament at the turn.

He managed to finish off on a much better note, though, after playing the last nine holes at two over par.

But the damage had already been done.

Smith’s two rounds also contained three birdies.

Of the 59 players in the field, only four advanced to the US Open to be held at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, North Carolina, from June 12 to 15.

Also among the notables failing to advance from the Sectional Qualifier was Patrick Cantlay, who led the World Amateur Golf Ranking for a record 55 weeks and finished in the top-25 in his first four PGA Tour events as an amateur in 2011, including being the low amateur at the US Open.

Smith, 28, reached the final hurdle of US Open qualifying after advancing from Local Qualifying at the Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, Rhode Island, last month.
