Nightclub hiring ‘Go-Go’ dancers

A nightclub’s plan to hire scantily-clad go-go dancers to entertain its patrons is causing a stir.

The unnamed venue has posted a recruitment advertisement through a local agency looking for “professional Club (Go-Go) Dancers”.

The successful applicants will dance on a podium in skimpy clothing including miniskirts, shorts, bikini tops and knee-high boots — described in the advert as “standard Go-Go dancer costumes”.

Some Islanders who spotted the advert — put together by International Recruitment Solutions, based in Flatts — are concerned the dancers are in poor taste and are not appropriate for Bermuda.

“Go go gives the impression of strippers and private rooms,” posted Thomas Christopher Famouss.

Gnica Brangman wrote: “This should be interestn. A lot of ppl wanted a general gentleman’s club. However, this does not seem like a classy or controlled environment.”

Many also criticised the advert’s plea that applicants have “at least three years experience in a similar position in a high-energy nightclub”, arguing that few, if any, Bermudians, would meet this requirement.

Shari-Lynn Pringle posted: “Who is going to qualify? We can’t expect to be everything for everybody. Some Bermudians should fit the bill — but not all.

“This could be something a young dance student (18 and older) might aspire to for summer employment ... but def a no-no on school nights.”

Ch maine Cann wrote: “This definitely rules out the Bermudians regardless of whether they have the ability or not because they haven’t been dancing in a high-energy club for 3 years.”

Roslynn Lee posted: “There’s no denying that we have great dancers in Bermuda ... but professional go go dancers with three years ACTUAL experience ... I’m not too sure ... I can dance and shimmy and kick high and dance in high heels but I don’t have the ‘experience’.”

But some people supported the idea of such performances, arguing that many major clubs in other countries have these dancers.

Others compared club dancers to synchronised dance groups such as the Follies and backed the idea of more entertainment on the Island.

Kimberley V Barnes Hines posted: “Go Go dancers are not strippers. They stay fully clothed. Most big clubs in the US have them.

“But I agree, adding the 3 years experience suggests they want work permits. Most clubs hire Go Go dancers via auditions.”

Katura Horton-Perinchief posted: “Go go dancers are the norm. They hype up the crowd. They are dancers and performers and just like every other dancer and performer, they should be auditioning. If they asked for at least three years dance experience to audition, we’d have quite a few Bermudians who might fit the bill.”

LaVerne Furbert wrote: “Those who can remember, Soul Train had ‘go go’ dancers and they did dance with all of their clothes on.

“Do you recall the Bermudians that danced with the Follies? They wore “hot shorts, bikini tops, miniskirts, etc.

“What did we see on Bermuda Day and I’m talking about Bermudian female dancers.

“How were the dressed? Other than the liturgical dancers, the rest were dressed in “hot shorts, bikini tops, miniskirts, etc”
