Bermuda finish sixth in group three

Neal Towlson played his first Davis Cup singles

Bermuda ended their Davis Cup Americas Zone group three campaign on a losing note at the Palmas Athletic Club in Puerto Rico on Saturday.

Bermuda went down 2-0 against Honduras in a play-off to determine fifth and sixth positions in the overall standings.

Bermuda fell behind in the tie after Gavin Manders lost to Alejandro Obana 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in a gruelling three-setter in the opening singles match.

And there would be no way back as Neal Towlson lost to Keny Turcios 6-3, 6-0 in the second singles match.

As the tie had been decided, the doubles match was not played.

Bermuda finished the tournament with an overall record of two wins and three losses, the Island’s best showing to date at this level.

The team of Jensen Bascome, David Thomas, Manders and Towlson finished third in group B and sixth overall among the participating countries.

Hosts Puerto Rico and Costa Rica, who were pitted in group B along with Bermuda, claimed the two promotion spots for group two next year.

Group B winners Puerto Rico beat group A runners-up Bahamas in the promotion play-off, while group B runners-up Costa Rica defeated group A winners Cuba in the other promotion play-off.
