Boycott organiser was a National Hero

June 7, 2014

Dear Sir,

In the 1950s there was racial segregation in Bermuda. As a young white man I could not take a coloured (black now) companion into a “whites only” restaurant, or to the balcony of the Island Theatre.

A very clever person thought of an idea to organise a Theatre Boycott, and together with several friends they went ahead with the scheme. This boycott was very well done, no violence at all, it just meant that the attendance dropped off for the theatres and the theatres finally gave in. That led to the beginning of the end of just about all segregation on the Island.

The person who organised this boycott deserves to be called A National Hero.

Sincerely

AJB
