It’s official: Tucker at the helm

Captain: Tucker

Janeiro Tucker has been named as captain of a 26-man Bermuda squad that has been selected to begin training for the ICC World Cricket League Division Three Tournament in Uganda in late October.

The squad contains several overseas based players, including David Hemp, the former captain who is now playing and coaching in Melbourne, Australia, and UK-based Tre Manders, Terryn Fray, Oronde Bascome, Onias Bascome, Stefan Kelly, Kamau Leverock, Delray Rawlins and Christian Burgess.

Making themselves unavailable are Stephen Outerbridge, who had a brief stint as captain after replacing Hemp, Damali Bell, Deunte Darrell and Rodney Trott.

“I’ve got commitments, just bought a house and I’m studying so I can’t train four times a week [with club and national squad] so I can’t commit,” said Outerbridge, the Bailey’s Bay captain.

As for playing for his country again in the future, Outebridge said: “I’ve just got to get on top of things and see from there. I wish everybody all the best and hope they do well for Bermuda.”

Arnold Manders has signed a 12-month contract which will take him through Bermuda’s next two major commitments, which also includes in the ICC regional Twenty20 2016 World Cup qualifiers early next year.

“I’m pleased to confirm that the BCB has contacted Arnold Manders as national coach for a 12-month period to May 31, 2015,” Lloyd Fray, the Bermuda Cricket Board president, said.

“This will allow Arnold to continue his good work with the squad to date and provide a year-round programme and preparation for the national senior team. Bermuda will be competing in two world ICC qualifying events in the next ten months and we plan to optimise our performances on the field in a very competitive environment.”

The squad contains just two players not with Premier Division clubs, Warwick’s player-coach Lionel Cann and Temiko Wilson, a wicketkeeper-batsman for Western Stars.

The absence of Jekon Edness, presumably because of work commitments as a school teacher, leaves the wicketkeeping spot up for grabs.

Sinclair Smith of Bailey’s Bay and Christian Burgess of St George’s are two other wicketkeepers in the training squad. Kwame Tucker, who was the wicketkeeper in Dubai last November for the World Twenty20 qualifiers, is the only player missing from that squad, but Manders has left the door open for others to be included.

Also not included are Treadwell Gibbons and Jason Anderson of Cleveland and Delyone Borden of St David’s.

“I believe we have a very talented and balanced squad with many options provided by the all-rounders,” Manders said. “I am disappointed that some players are not available but I fully understand and respect their decisions.

“I will continue to keep an open-door policy for players that put in good performances over the coming months in domestic cricket, either here on in the UK, including players such as Greg Maybury, Joshua Gilbert and Okera Bascome.

“I am very happy with the overseas monitoring and preparation programme that we have for the many UK-based players we have in our squad which features a good crop of young talent.

‘I expect all players to be totally committed to the programme as we are at a very competitive level and we will need to be at our best to reach the lofty goals that we have set for ourselves.”
