Haak finds his way in Fidelty Couples race
Although he lost a few seconds double-checking where the final turnaround point was on the course, Andrew Haak was a comfortable winner of the Fidelity Couples 5K road race.
In hot and humid conditions he crossed the finish line in 18min 2sec.
Fast-improving Stuart Palmer was second in 18:39, with Jahmai Lottimore third in 19:12.
Haak said afterwards that he momentarily slowed to a jog on East Broadway to check for the correct turn-off to reach the finish near the offices of event sponsor Fidelity International.
First woman Rose-Anna Hoey was a double winner on the day because she was also the “better” half of the fastest couple. She was fifth overall in 19:27 and not too far behind was husband David in 21:43. The Hoeys’ combined time of 41:40 secured the Married Couples team prize.
Second woman was Catherine Mello in 21:32. She was part of the winning corporate team, Platinum, with colleague Damian Simmons only 16 seconds in arrears.
Third woman was Patti Merritt in 22:10.
In the competitive walk, Sinclair Smith took the honours in 34:30, with Sheena Young staying ahead of Gary Young by two seconds to claim the runner-up spot in 35:20.
