US will accept UK passports that have been given extension

US authorities will accept extended UK passports, offered for British residents who could be affected by a backlog at Her Majesty’s Passport Office.

But the extended UK passports will only be suitable for US travel if the passport holder has either a green card or visitor visa.

The one-year extension has been offered via Government House, and is open to travellers to the US whose UK passports are either about to expire, or have expired within the last three months.

UK and Canadian authorities have agreed to accept UK passports that have been endorsed for extension.

However, travellers bound for the US under the visa waiver scheme, or who are using ESTAs, will not be able to use UK passports whose validity has been extended, and should apply to the US Consulate General for a visa.
