St George’s colt Burgess faces race for fitness

Injury blow: Burgess

Zeko Burgess, a colt for St George’s in Cup Match last year, has been sidelined after knee surgery.

The young fast bowler is back from school overseas but has not been able to play because of the operation.

“He’s doing therapy right now and resting his knee,” said Charlie Marshall, the chairman of the selectors. “He brought it to my attention at the beginning of June and I told him he needed to rest and not come out too soon.

“He’s willing to play but we advised him to rest until the end of June. He’s been doing light training and we’ll assess things in the first week of July.”

St George’s have scheduled a trial match for Saturday at Wellington Oval when they take on St David’s for the Turkey Barnes Trophy. Rodney Trott will lead the team — their first trial match after last weekend’s match was called off — in the absence of captain Oronde Bascome who is still studying in England.

Only four players from last year’s Cup Match team are included, as Christian Burgess, another colt last year, is also in school in England, but Marshall believes it will provide a good opportunity to look at other players as Cup Match approaches.

“I don’t have an idea when Christian or Oronde are coming back, that’s why we’re moving ahead with the trial matches,” Marshall said. “We know what guys are capable of doing, so we’re just experimenting and looking at other players in the meantime. Next weekend we will have another interclub trial match.”

With the players abroad, St George’s have been depleted in the league where they are yet to win a match, also losing to Western Stars in the Belco Cup.In Bascome’s absence Macai Simmons and Mishael Paynter have captained the league team.

“We definitely haven’t had a good start but the guys are consistent in training,” Marshall said. “Remember, we have a group of young players going into Premier Division cricket who are still learning the game and at the same time still making minor mistakes.

“The only way they are going to learn is to keep playing them. We really don’t have a large pool of players anyway in St George’s.”

The game starts at 10am and all players are asked to be at the field by 8.45am. Anyone unavailable is asked to notify the club on 297-0374.

n The Bermuda Cricket Board will hold the Hiscox 11 and Under and Bank of Bermuda Foundation 14 and Under All-Star games on Saturday at the National Sports Centrenorth field.

The 11 and Under game will begin at 9.30am and the 14 and Under clash at 12.30.
