Musicians head to New York for cultural exchange

Outward bound: 13 students from Professor Eddie Ming’s Drum School and Rhythm Lab set off this week, with parents and chaperones, for a cultural exchange at New York’s Collective School of Music

A team of local musicians, ranging in age from nine to 62, will bring the sounds of Bermuda to New York’s Collective School of Music when they set off for ten days of cultural interchange.

“It’s a musical, percussion and cultural exchange programme,” musician Eddie Ming said of his trip with a team of students from his Rhythm Lab.

“With the students, chaperones and parents, it’s like a family vacation.”

With some financial assistance from the Bermuda Arts Council, the group will take off for their fifth year of exchange at the Manhattan based school, known as the Collective.

The school specialises in contemporary rhythm — and intensive programmes using a variety of musical styles and settings.

The council’s cultural legacy fund will cover the academia, while the Rhythm Lab raised the rest of its money in-house.

Travelling are students Javoni Swan, AJ Smith, Kenai Stowe, Shannon Simmons, Sheun Simmons, Jahnari Crane, Equan Richardson, Jaydon Roberts, Malcolm Hollis, Jehkio Bean, J’Kai Berkeley, Bryson Doers and Gary Smith — who were sent off on Monday with a farewell presentation on the steps of City Hall.
