Douglas triumphs at the death

Cool head: Douglas enjoyed a last-gasp win over Lewis Daley at Belmont Hills yesterday

Arriek Douglas went down to the wire to defeat Lewis Daley 1-up in the Championship Division of the HSBC Junior National Championships at Belmont Hills

The juniors had to battle in hot and humid conditions during first round matches, with Douglas having to dig deep to beat Daley on the final hole to set up a quarter-final meeting with Walker Campbell, the defending champion, today.

Mikus Ming defeated Joe Waters 3 and 2 in yesterday’s other Championship Division match to set up a clash against Sam Wehmeyer, who won the medal round on Monday with his five-over-par 75, today.

Today’s other two Championship Division matches will have Cory DeSilva playing Kheary Swan, and Dakota Lamb taking on Alex Mason.

Lamb shot a 79 in the medal round to finish second while DeSilva was third with an 81.

In the Open division, ten-year-old Kenny Leseur put together the lowest round of his Bermuda Junior Golf Association career with an outstanding 76 to claim the medallist title.

He finished 13 strokes ahead of Luke Watson on 89 to send a clear message to his rivals as he opens the defence of his title against Joe Watson this morning in the semi-finals.

Watson beat John Ewles yesterday 7 and 6 while in the other match Tyler Emery beat Ethan Sousa 8 and 6 to set up a match with Luke Watson.

Matches begin today at 10am with Campbell taking on Douglas in the first pairing. In a change from last year’s tournament, the Open Division will have a 36-hole final, played over two days on tomorrow and Friday.

The Championship final will be played over 36 holes on Friday.
