College readies for 40th birthday

Bermuda College campus at Stonington

The Bermuda College is preparing to celebrate 40 years of education this year with a host of activities, starting this summer.

The college, the Island’s only postsecondary educational institute, was founded in 1974 when the Bermuda College Act brought together the Bermuda Hotel and Catering College, the Bermuda Technical Institute and the Academic Sixth Form Centre.

Festivities are set to kick off at 6.30pm on July 22 with a tree planting ceremony at the North Pavilion of National Stadium on Roberts Avenue — the original site of the college — followed by a “sunset walk” to the college’s current home on Stonington Avenue. The event will conclude with music, refreshments and a “Throw Back Tuesday” photo show.

Registration for the event has already begun with a fee of $10, which will be put towards student scholarships through the Bermuda College Foundation. Those who register will receive a T-shirt, while the first 40 people to register will also receive a gift bag.

A host of other community activities are being scheduled for the rest of the year, including a golf tournament in October, a ‘70s party in November, a community movie night, two tag days and the publication of Bermuda’s first academic journal, “Voices in Education.”

And BC Alumni, who send their name and contact information to alumni@college.bm, will be eligible to win one of a number of prizes commemorating the school’s anniversary.
