Campbell remains on course to defend title

Lighting it up: Wehmeyer suffered a play-off defeat against Ming in the Championship Division at Belmont Hills

Morning rain and blustery winds influenced yesterday’s second round matches in the HSBC Junior National Championships at Belmont Hills Golf Club, with Walker Campbell, the defending champion, beating Arriek Douglas 3 and 2.

Campbell, steady and level-headed, saw off the challenge from Douglas’s long and accurate game as he won the match on the 18th hole. Campbell’s opponent in today’s semi-final will be Cory DeSilva, a soon-to-be Troy University freshman, who advanced after a 6 and 4 victory over Kheary Swan.

In the closest match in the Championship Division, Mikus Ming defeated No 2 seed Sam Wehmeyer on the first play-off hole after the pair could not be separated through 18 holes.

Both played very well the entire day despite the conditions, with Wehmeyer hitting a tee shot out of bounds which allowed Ming to seize the opportunity and win the play-off.

Ming will meet Alex Mason in today’s other semi-final after Mason produced a sold round of golf to defeat Dakota Lamb 6 and 5.

In the Open Division, No 1 seed Kenny Leseur defeated Joe Watson 5 and 4 to reach the 36-hole final which begins today. Tyler Emery will be his opponent after beating Luke Watson by 1 hole in a battle until the 18th.

In today’s consolation matches Wehmeyer has a bye after Daley’s withdrawal, while Kheary Swan will play Arriek Douglas, Joe Waters will face Dakota Lamb, John Ewles meets Luke Watson and Ethan Sousa takes on Joe Watson.
