Darien Hewey has concluded his high school rugby career on a high note, winning the most valuable player award at Trinity College in Canada.

The former CedarBridge Academy student from Southampton previously played in the centre positions for his school, but his coaches made the decision to switch him this season to full back, where it was felt that his pace and counter-attacking abilities were best suited.

This move paid off early, as Hewey scored three tries in a pre-season national Canadian Accredited Independent Schools tournament and another seven in the league.

Most of Hewey’s tries were scored in exciting fashion, with him beating several opponents on long runs. Hewey was the fastest player on the team and likely in the league.

He was a threat to reach the tryline every time he touched the ball. He also served as one of the team’s primary place-kickers and managed several conversions during the season.

Another Bermudian, Graham Cooke, also played rugby at Trinity College for the past two years, serving as team captain during the play-offs while also being an important member of the squad as hooker.
