Leaders looks to tighten stranglehold

St David's captain OJ Pitcher

St David’s and Somerset Bridge, the Premier and First Divisions leaders, will be looking to extend their winning streaks to six matches this weekend as the season enters its halfway stage.

The defending champions, St David’s, travel to Southampton Oval to meet a Southampton Rangers team looking to rebound from their tense three-run defeat to Willow Cuts last weekend.

St David’s lead the standings by five points ahead of Willow Cuts who have already completed the first half of their schedule and have a bye this weekend, which would allow either St David’s, the only unbeaten team, to either extend their lead or for Rangers, presently third, to close the gap on Cuts.

It is a busy weekend for Rangers as they also open the defence of their Western Counties title total against Warwick.

In tomorrow’s other Premier Division matches, mid-table teams Bailey’s Bay and Somerset Cricket Club clash at Sea Breeze Oval as they try to put some space between themselves and the bottom two teams, while basement dwellers St George’s host Cleveland at Wellington Oval in a game involving the bottom teams.

St George’s are the only team in the top division without a win and trail Cleveland by 13 points.

In the First Division, Somerset Bridge have won five games on the trot after their season-opening defeat against the Bermuda Under-17 side and lead the league by one point over Western Star.

Bridge travel to St David’s to meet Flatts knowing that victory will see them open a lead at the top as Stars have a bye this weekend.

PHC meet Warwick tomorrow at PHC Field while the under-17 team play Devonshire Recreation Club today at St John’s Field.
