No magic bullet
Dear Sir,
Much as I would like to see the America’s Cup staged in Bermuda I cannot share the effusive enthusiasm espoused in your Saturday editorial and the implied suggestion that this will be the magic bullet to turn around our dismal economy.
If a story you ran — when the possibilities of hosting this event were first mooted — was accurate then I believe we should think carefully of the downside and the possibility of a financial nightmare. Your story indicated that San Francisco — surely a colossus in the travel industry — actually withdrew itself from contention this time around because it lost $15 million after hosting the last series!
Isn’t there a lesson to be learned here? How does isolated Bermuda expect to do better than San Francisco — impossible from a heads in beds point of view and let’s face it that last series couldn’t have been more exciting with it’s fantastic come-from-behind conclusion. Tread carefully Bermuda.
