Digicel Bermuda commercial director Alistair Beak has been made the company’s chief executive officer, while outgoing CEO Wayne Caines has been appointed non-executive vice chairman of the board.

Mr Caines led the company for six years from a pure mobile provider to a full service business solutions provider serving some of the country’s largest companies, according to a press release.

Mr Beak will report to Claudio Hidalgo, chief operating officer for the Caribbean and Central America.

A telecoms industry veteran, Mr Beak has worked all over the world in senior roles for Vodafone, including stints in Qatar, the Czech Republic and the UK. Previously, he owned and operated a marketing services business. He holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Bath in the UK.

Mr Caines commented: “It’s been a great six years. In that time, the business has gone from strength to strength and we have achieved a number of significant milestones including the launches of 4G and Digicel Business.

“The Island of Bermuda has one of the highest data penetrations in the world and I am proud to have been a part of that innovation drive.

“The time is right for me to move on to some new opportunities but I am delighted to be staying with the Digicel family by accepting the role of non-executive vice chairman on the board of Digicel Bermuda.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank our valued staff and customers for their support and to wish Alistair all the best in his new role.”

Mr Beak stated: “I am delighted with this opportunity to step into the role of CEO for Digicel Bermuda. In my short time with the company, I’ve seen first-hand what a dynamic and passionate group of individuals we have at Digicel and look forward to continuing the great work of Wayne and the team.

“As always, our focus will be on ensuring that our customers benefit from our commitment to deliver the best of the best to them.”

Mr Hidalgo said: “I would like to congratulate Wayne on his move. He has done a great job in Bermuda, where he has been instrumental in building and cementing Digicel’s position as a full service telecommunications provider. I would like to thank him for his service to date and to wish him all the best for his new role on the board which I know he will make a great success of.

“Likewise, I would like to congratulate Alistair on his promotion and am confident that he will continue to deliver on our promise to the people of Bermuda of best value, best service and best network.”
