Rangers leave St George’s in a spin

Derrick Brangman and Vernon Eve, the Southampton Rangers left-arm slow bowlers, shared nine of the wickets as the visiting side comfortably beat St George’s yesterday.

An opening stand of 33 in eight overs between Oronde Bascome, the St George’s captain playing his first league match of the season, and Misheal Paynter briefly threatened a strong resistance, but wickets fell regularly after the partnership was broken as St George’s crumbled to 78 all out in reply to the Rangers total of 242.

A last wicket stand of 41 between Kevin Tucker and Ryan Belboda, along with 12 penalty runs after St George’s were penalised for having overs still remaining after the 3.30pm cut-off, pushed the Rangers score well past the 200 mark, a total St George’s have not managed to reach all season.

And when Paynter was caught and bowled by Brangman off his first delivery as first-change, the St George’s innings quickly began to fall apart.

Two wickets fell on 45, including the captain for a top knock of 20, and Brangman and Eve continued to take wickets cheaply as no other St George’s batsman reached double figures in an innings lasting just 25.2 overs.

Brangman, who had brothers Oronde and Onias Bascome caught by Janeiro Tucker at short extra covers, finished with impressive figures five for 23 off 9.2 overs while Eve picked up four wickets in his four overs at the other end to finish with four for six.

Earlier, Brangman and Eve, who opened the Rangers batting, both went cheaply as St George’s had Rangers 56 for three after Dion Stovell went for just 13.

A fourth wicket stand of 38 between Alex Dore and captain Janeiro Tucker carried them to 94 when Tucker departed for 21, before two more quick wickets gave St George’s some hope at 101 for six.

Two valuable stands of 36 for the seventh and eighth wickets stalled the St George’s bid to wrap up the innings as Shannon Raynor, Kwame Tucker and Rohaan Simons made valuable late contributions to push Rangers to a comfortable total.

Kevin Tucker’s team high 40 came off four fours and two sixes. Zeko Burgess, Macai Simmons and Macai Young all took two wickets for St George’s.
