Unlawful wounding accused set for trial

A Warwick man accused of wounding someone with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm was told yesterday his trial would go ahead despite his lawyer withdrawing from the case.

Dennis Maynard, 43, from Warwick is accused of unlawfully wounding Raymond Jones on October 11 last year.

He appeared for mention at the Supreme Court in front of Judge Carlisle Greaves, and his defence lawyer, Elizabeth Christopher, requested to step aside because she had been unable to meet enough with the accused to fully discuss the case.

Mr Maynard said he had suffered some personal difficulties, including the death of his father and his mother being admitted to hospital.

Judge Greaves said: “You can’t tell me you have issues with your father and mother, you’re a 43-year-old man. You can’t delay the trial.

“Counsel is allowed to withdraw and the trial date is fixed for August 11 whether or not defence has counsel ready and able to proceed.”

Mr Maynard’s bail was extended.
