Bermudian to make debut with cover band in London

Desta Zion Wilson

A Stevie Wonder tribute band led by Bermudian singer Desta “Zion” Wilson will be making its debut at a prominent London musical event this weekend.

The Splash FM Garden tribute concert held at the Steyne Gardens in Worthing West Sussex is the biggest southcoast tribute festival in the United Kingdom.

In the past, it has been attended by up to 10,000 music lovers. This year, it will include musical tributes to Stevie Wonder and Swedish pop group ABBA.

“It’s a privilege to sing Stevie Wonders’ greatest hits,” said Mr Wilson, lead vocalist for Songs in the Key of Stevie. “I get butterflies in my stomach each time I get on the stage to perform.”

The band was formed in 2012 by Simon Clark and Nick Leigh of entertainment provider company Tailored Entertainment in the United Kingdom.

With only seven months experience working with Tailored Entertainment, Mr Wilson was asked to be the lead vocalist Songs in the Key of Stevie.

“I was nervous at first, but they convinced me that I would be perfect for the job,” said Mr Wilson.

He accepted the offer and has been working with the band ever since.

Music legend Stevie Wonder is known for his ability to reach and provide great range to the high pitch notes.

Mr Wilson said: “Stevie Wonder’s singing range is hard to compete with, but I’m proud of each show that I perform in.

“It’s exciting and feels like home performing up on stage. Performing allows me the opportunity to break out of my comfort zone.”

Mr Wilson began his career performing with his mother and singer, Phiemma Caisey, and grandmother, June Caisey Dill, in an annual family concert in Bermuda.

He also participated in Chewstick’s open mic nights.

In 2008, Mr Wilson performed with the Academy of Contemporary Music gospel choir on BBC1 television series Last Choir Standing.

The gospel choir made it as far as to the competition semi finals but after their appearance on the television show they began performing as a professional choir.

Mr Wilson’s singing career took a turn for the better when he had the opportunity to audition for NBC’s American television hit singing competition The Voice.

During the competition he was mentored by singer and songwriter Jessie J.

During their mentor sessions she told the young entertainer that she wanted him remain on her team because she had high expectations for him.

The young singer will be releasing his first debut cover album of Fleetwood Mac’s tunes on August 1.

The album will be available in digital download including a video that can viewed on www.youtube.com/watch?v=fypfg_LUyRk & feature=youtu.be.

You can purchase songs from the album on Skylarkin.bandcamp.com including an additional website www.steviewonderexperience.co.uk/.

Tickets can be purchased for £10 from the Worthing Theatre.

The concert will be on July 19 at 5pm at Steyne Gardens, Worthing, Sussex.
