Howard Lee Memorial race set for Hamilton

Race in his honour: the late Howard Lee

Fitted dinghy rivals Contest III and Elizabeth II will go head-to-head for the Howard Lee Memorial trophy in Hamilton Harbour tomorrow.

The race gets underway at 5.30pm and starts and ends at the Flagpole.

Contest III won last year’s inaugural race honouring the legacy of the late Lee, who is Bermuda’s first and only black Olympic sailor.

He represented Bermuda in the Finn Class at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada. Lee’s grandson, Rockal Evans, forms part of Contest III’s crew that will be looking to defend their title against their rivals from Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club.

Also sailing aboard the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club dinghy are skipper Peter Miller and remaining crew Will Thompson, Julia Lines, Dimitri Stevens, Chase Cooper and the evergreen Roger Mello.

Sailing aboard Elizabeth II are John Nicholls, the skipper, and crew Steven Benn, Alex Adelsburg, Hanna Simpson, Michael Hooper and Peter Dill.

Contest III, the reigning champions, presently hold a comfortable lead in the Coronation Cup standings over nearest rivals Elizabeth II and are fresh off a clean sweep of honours in St George’s Harbor last weekend.

The Bermuda Fitted Dinghy is a traditional wooden boat that is sailed with a crew of six to seven people, the most vital role on the boat being that of the bailer.
