Team named for China experience

China-bound: Scraders

Seven athletes from four sports will represent Bermuda at the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Nanjing, China, from August 16 to 28.

The Bermuda Olympic Association confirmed yesterday that three track and field athletes — Kyra Scraders, Jahnai Perinchief and Kionje Somner — are in the team along with two triathletes, Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith. Cecilia Wollmann, a sailor, and swimmer Jesse Washington will also compete.

The team will be supported by six officials, including the chef de mission Katura Horton-Perinchief.

Judy Simons, the BOA president, said: “The BOA is pleased to support and assist the seven young Bermudians who will represent our country at Nanjing

“They are great ambassadors for Bermuda and, at the Games, they will have the opportunity not only to compete on the world stage, but to interact with young athletes from all over the globe.

“It is a wonderful opportunity and a significant milestone in their journeys to success. We congratulate the athletes on their achievements so far and wish them the very best of luck in competition. We know they will do us proud.”

Scraders, reaffirmed her potential by winning gold medals in the 800 and 400 metres at the recent CAC Junior Championships in Morelia, Mexico, while Perinchief won a bronze medal in the high jump.

Washington was also in action recently, winning two gold and two silver medals at the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships in Barbados.
