Beachfest Song Competition finalists named

And the results are in ... for the first ever Beachfest Song Competition.

Ten local songwriters have been chosen to move on to the contest semi-finals after garnering the most views for their videos on the Beachfest Bermuda YouTube channel.

One overall winner will be selected among the finalists: Bruce Perinchief, Mike Hind, Juice, Ray, Kidd Clazzic, Quinn Outerbridge, Samuel Alexander, Rivah, Eminence and Will B.

A total of 36,000 total views from around the world poured in over the past two weeks.

Currently in the top spot is Bermudian musician Mr Perinchief, with 972 views, for his playful and fun summer reggae anthem called Wind Up On It.

Local singer and ukulele artist Mr Hind, aka Uncle Elvis, is close behind in second place with a total of 935 views for his catchy love song Comic Book Hero; while rapper Juice is in third place with Sho Girl.

Organised by PRS for Music and The Chewstick Foundation, the national song competition will award one lucky artist some impressive prizes, including a scooter and studio time worth $10,000.

More than 70 songs from 50 different artists were submitted earlier this summer.

People are now being encouraged to vote for their favourite song, by texting the artist’s name to 500-1834.

Each text will cost $1, with all proceeds going toward Chewstick’s youth, arts, cultural and community programmes.

You also have a chance to hear the semi-finalists throughout the week on Vibe 103FM and can see them on a special television presentation on Channel 82.

“If that’s not enough, the semi-finalists will be performing live at the first night of Cup Match Summer Splash,” said Gavin “Djata” Smith, of The Chewstick Foundation. “The artists with the most text votes will make it through to the finals which will be announced at the event.

“The finalists will then perform live at Beachfest on Emancipation Day (Thursday, July 31) at Horseshoe Bay before a prestigious panel of judges, including an international recording artist and local and international music industry professionals.”

Desmond Townsend, from PRS for Music, congratulated the artists who made it this far.

“We’re delighted that so many talented songwriters have entered the Beachfest Crown Song Competition,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on Bermudian music not only locally, but also on the world stage. Good luck to all of the competitors in the next round.”
