Double dose of agony for PHC

Somerset Bridge kept up their push for promotion when they beat PHC by one run in a thrilling match at PHC Field yesterday.

The result meant PHC suffered a second heartbreaking loss on the weekend after defeat by Bermuda Under-17.

Yesterday, Bridge kept First Division leaders Western Stars in their sights with victory by the narrowest of margins after scoring 241 for eight in their allotted overs and then dismissing PHC for 240.

Victory was sealed when a direct hit from an under-arm throw from Wayne Ball Jr, the square-leg fielder, ran out Kacy Greene on the last ball of the match, with PHC needing two runs to win.

PHC were well placed for victory when a 97-run stand for the seventh wicket between Dean Richards and Jade Morris carried them from 134 to 231. Donnie Charles broke the partnership when he bowled Richards for 89, which included nine fours and two sixes.

Going into the final over, PHC were 239 for seven and Noel Woods, the Bridge captain, took the responsibility by bowling Morris for 28 and Charles Trott to set up the thrilling finish.

Woods ended with figures of three for 32 from ten overs while Jermaine Salaam had three for 42 off ten and Charles two for 45 from his ten overs.

Earlier, PHC were penalised 30 runs for a slow over-rate as they conceded a total of 70 extras in the Bridge innings. Ezekiel Greenwood was high man with 98 before he was bowled by Marcus Simmons on the last ball of the innings. Woods contributed 30 at No?7 as the pair added 73 for the sixth wicket.

Simmons claimed two for 27, Greene two for 34 and Sheridan Ming two for 42.

On Saturday, Bermuda Under-17 picked up their third win when they beat PHC by two wickets at St John’s Field. PHC managed just 108 as spinners Delray Rawlins and Cameron Jeffers took three wickets apiece. Rawlins, who took the new ball, had three for 15 from five overs while first-change Jeffers took three for 20 from five. Charles Trott was the top scorer for PHC with 32.

Rawlins and opener Nzari Paynter led the youngsters’ batting with 22 and 20 before Chae Smith and Jeffers shared in an unbroken stand of 31 for the ninth wicket, which took them to victory. Smith finished on 16 not out and Jeffers ten not out after coming together at 82 for eight.

Jahkhari Hollis led the PHC bowling with four for 37 from 8.1 overs while Trott took two for 24 from ten overs.

Western Stars beat Devonshire Rec by 98 runs to remain at the top of the standings. They posted their biggest total of the league season, 250 for eight, and then dismissed Devonshire Rec for 152 with player-coach Wendell White leading the way on 41, while Rohan Davis scored 38 not out at No?9 and Temiko Wilson, the captain, 35.

Wilson and White rescued Stars from 36 for three with a fourth-wicket stand of 94. Brian Hall contributed 28 and Naquan Smith 22 not out after adding 43 for the ninth wicket with Davis.

Steven Bremar took two for 27 and Lamont Brangman two for 60 for Rec, who came up short in their run chase, with Dapo Frederick scoring 27 and Sean DeGraff 22.

Seion Darrell claimed five for 51 from ten overs of spin for Stars, while Seth Campbell took three for 38.
