HRC: mind your language online

Human rights watchdogs today warned social media users over illegal language in political debates.

Human Rights Commission (HRC) chairman Michael Hanson said it had been monitoring online comments involving plans to reform middle schools and the recent march on Government House to protest at Governor George Fergusson’s decision to refuse an inquiry into alleged historical land grabs.

Mr Hanson added: “The racial and hostile statements towards Bermudians, in particular, those of certain political affiliations and others, is very disturbing.”

And he warned that anyone using hate speech in online debates could end fall foul of the Human Rights Act.

Mr Hanson said: “The Commissioners feel it is incumbent on us to again remind the public that, whilst it is the right of all to express their opinions, this must be in a lawful framework.

“We are continually concerned that many online debates degrade into hateful, vexatious and/or harmful words in respect of an individuals national origin, political opinion, political opinion or any other protected ground under the Act.”

And he added that anyone with a complaint or concerns over online behaviour should contact the HRC on 295 5859 or e-mail humanrights@gov.bm.

Mr Hanson said the HRC had recently flagged concern over a “rising tide of anger” over the possibility of Bermudian status for PRC holders and “discriminatory” comments made about politicians, Bermudians, PRC holders, non-Bermudians and others.
