Cup Match is serious business for residents.

If you’re a Somerset supporter you know not to be seen wearing anything light blue; if St George’s is your team then you’ll probably put away even the slightest hint of red for the next week or two.

For this week’s Fashion on the Street column, we spoke to three young people who told us a little about their preferred style over the upcoming holiday weekend.

Stacey Pitcher wouldn’t consider going to Somerset Cricket Club field without representing her East End team.

“I will definitely be wearing St George’s colours. I actually have my Cup Match outfit already picked out,” the senior auditor said.

“I will be wearing a high-waisted skirt, a light blue top, probably ribbons in my hair somehow and some flip flops. Heels are just not comfortable when you are walking around all day on the field.”

The 27-year-old is originally from St David’s and grew up in the East End.

She described her style as “a little bit high fashion”, comfortable and not too trendy. “I try and stick to pieces that are more neutral, colours that will always be in fashion, like blacks and nudes,” she said.

“I do like a little bit of colour here and there, but not crazy patterns that will be out of style by next month.”

She said she typically shops overseas at stores like Express where the clothes are reasonably priced, comfortable and last a long time.

Avid Somerset supporter Arnario Shillingford, 30, was spotted on the city streets wearing a hint of light blue, but said come next week he would be rocking his team colours every day.

“I always go to the game on Friday rocking my red and blue,” he said. “On Thursday I will go to Beachfest and usually wear my team’s pin. Then on Sunday I wear my pin again at Non Mariner’s.

“The whole Cup Match I try to wear red and blue at some point, even on the Wednesday night before the game starts.”

He said his ideal outfit would probably be some red TOMS shoes, then shorts and a top in either red or navy blue.

“I will be wearing blue and red from head to toe,” he said.

Mr Shillingford said his overall style has changed somewhat since moving to London. “It’s become a lot more European. I would say it’s trendy, preppy, but also casual,” he explained.

“I love colours because I have tanned skin so they stand out well on me. I try to avoid all the dark colours that they wear in London, so I figured that while I’m home visiting I would bring only bright colours back with me to represent the essence of Bermuda.”

He occasionally reads men’s fashion magazines and gets inspired by what he sees other people wearing. He also likes to see what the mannequins on the high street in London’s Oxford Circus have on. “That has a big influence on me,” he said.

“I don’t really follow celebrity fashion, but if I had to pick a fashion icon I would say Pharrell [Williams] is pretty trendy and Justin Timberlake as well.”

Jodi Lewis, 30, a public relations and marketing professional, hasn’t picked a team for this year’s Cup Match.

“I am obviously a St George’s girl because my home is in Hamilton Parish, but I went to the game last year and Somerset showed me a lot of love so I am a little indifferent about it. Plus, I’ve been living off the Island for so long I don’t really have a team anymore.”

She said her ideal thing to wear for Cup Match would probably be a two-piece halter top and skirt, along with a cowgirl hat and maybe a body chain to show off her slim physique.

Outside of the holiday, Mrs Lewis said her style tends to be “pretty boring”.

“My closet is filled with a lot of black, white and brown and earth tone shades, but lately I have been wearing burned orange [as] that looks really nice on me.

“I am trying to wear more colours considering I am growing up and want my wardrobe to expand with my maturity.”

She said she typically finds fashion inspiration in magazines. She also occasionally tries to mimic styles seen on actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who has a similar petite build to Mrs Lewis.

No matter what you plan to wear this Cup Match, The Royal Gazette hopes your holiday will be a happy one!
