Interns applauded for summer work

Closing remarks were given by three students currently enrolled in the Summer Employment Programme, who shared their experiences with the audience — Peter Cooper (BELCO Summer Intern), Elyssa-June Smith, (Bermuda Health Council Intern), and Vashon Williams (Central Government Laboratory)

The Department of Workforce Development has celebrated the resounding success of its Summer Employment Programme (SEP).

A reception was held for the 150 interns who completed summer placements in areas including government, private and non-profit sectors.

“I applaud every student here, and their families, for making a significant investment in their future and recognising the importance of personal and professional development to enable them to be competitive in today’s workforce,” Sen Michael Fahy said. “We, the Government, are equally committed to ensuring opportunities like the Summer Employment Programme continue, where you can gain significant experience, cultivate a strong work ethic, and propel yourself closer to your career goals.”

SEP is one of many programmes developed by the Department of Labour and Training. “SEP is committed to preparing Bermuda’s youth for a rewarding future. Via SEP, youth become appreciative of the importance of planning for their future and making appropriate choices and career decisions,” the Government careers website states. “This programme stresses the need for a proper education. SEP is designed to provide Bermudian students with meaningful work and training experience for ten weeks during the summer months.”

It furthermore adds that the SEP benefits businesses by creating relationships between students and potential future employers. Students are able to assist and lend support to daily tasks, and businesses receive exemption from payroll taxes by participating in the programme.
