Bermuda pair make solid starts in Maine

Augustus had an eagle on his card yesterday

Local professional golfers Daniel Augustus and Camiko Smith held their own during yesterday’s opening round of the Greater Bangor Open in Maine.

Augustus carded a one-over-par 70 that included an eagle at the 359-yard, 17th, a par four. He also had three birdies that helped to offset a double bogey on the very first hole and four bogeys on the back nine.

After the first 18 holes, Augustus was tied for 34th, ten shots behind leader Mike Van Sickle, who fired a bogey-free nine-under 60 that included two eagles and five birdies.

Smith would have also been satisfied with the day’s showing after signing off with a two-over 71 that contained two birdies and four bogeys.

Smith made the turn at two over and remained there after playing the back nine at even par to enter the clubhouse tied for 52nd among an overall field of 108 golfers.

Smith and Augustus will now look to climb farther up the leaderboard when they tee off in the second round today.

Two shots adrift of Sickle is Jesse Larson, who shot a 62, followed in third by David Chung with 63.

The 54-hole tournament is being played at the 6,399-yard Bangor Municipal Golf Club.
