Steady second rounds for Smith, Augustus

Smith produced another steady round of golf yesterday at the Greater Bangor Open in Maine

Camiko Smith and Daniel Augustus, Bermuda’s professional golfers, produced another steady round of golf at the Greater Bangor Open in Maine yesterday.

The local duo both shot one-over par 70 during the second round, with past Bermuda Open winner Augustus doing so for the second straight day.

The big hitting Augustus rolled in back-to-back birdies at the par-five 4th and par-four 5th — for the second straight round — to make the turn at even par for the round and one under for the tournament.

But he was unable to make further inroads coming in, playing the final nine holes at two over par which left him tied for 44th with a two-round total of two over par 140 heading into the final 18 holes of the 54 hole event being played at the 6,399-yard Bangor Municipal Golf Club.

Smith, who reached the second stage of US Open qualifiers this year, entered the clubhouse tied for 49th after carding his lowest round of the tournament thus far. Smith started the round at two over par which he shaved down to one over after tapping in for birdie on the first hole.

But he lost some momentum after making bogey at the par three 6th hole to complete the front nine at even par, two over for the tournament.

Another birdie at the par four 13th sent Smith back to one over before he bogeyed two of the last four holes which left him with a two-round total of three-over par 141.

Yesterday saw David Chung grab a share of the lead with overnight leader Mike Van Sickle after firing the day’s lowest round of six under par 63 that included six birdies.

Sickle, who hit the ground running after blazing his way to a nine under par 60 during the first round, returned a three under par 66 that included four birdies and a solitary bogey, his first of the tournament.

After 36 holes Chung and Sickle are at 12 under par 126, with Jesse Larson a further shot adrift in third heading into the final round.
