Most residents have a story about how they came to support their favourite Cup Match team — even if it’s as short as ‘My momma told me so’.

The fact of the matter is whether your family has lived in the East End for several generations or you’ve just recently moved to Somerset Village, picking a team can become one of the best parts of the holiday.

When else do you have the opportunity to engage in competitive banter at every street corner — and still have friends when the weekend’s festivities are up?

The Royal Gazette Lifestyle section asked some of our contacts to tell us what team they will be supporting over the holiday and why.

For Patrina O’Connor, aka Powergirl Trina, there’s no doubt she will be boasting red and blue to support her favourite team.

“There is no secret here! I am very verbal about what team I support. I am a proud SOMERSET fan!,” the radio personality said.

“I post it all over social media and spread it over the airwaves! I support Somerset because the best comes from the West!”

She said that Superman, Spiderman and Wonder Woman wore red and blue — and she will proudly be wearing an ‘S’ on her chest this weekend.

Filmmaker Lucinda Spurling is equally as passionate about her End End team. “I am a St George’s supporter, of course,” she said. “Everyone at the game knows me, not by name, but by the same shirt I have been wearing since circa 1995 that says ‘Bermudian by birth, Eastender by de grace of God’.

“It is actually the same shirt and it has seen better days. I had a tiny baby-sized version made up for my daughter Eva and took her to her first Cup Match when she was just seven months old, which was a little ambitious!

“My husband is a Somerset fan — yes, it’s not the best dynamic this time of year. But Eva is St George’s born and bred.”

Although jewellery designer Alexandra Mosher counts herself as an enthusiastic East Ender, it seems that her Cup Match-inspired jewellery is a big hit with fans of the opposing team.

[I’m] blue and blue through and through,” she said. “We’ve had way more Somerset fans come in to get their red and blue colours.”

People who live in the central parishes are just as passionate.

Communications manager Carlita Lodge has always been a “Somerset girl”.

“My loyalty is so extreme that I only wear red and blue for the week leading up to the game,” she explained.

“Plus, the Somerset fans are the undefeated champions of tug-o-war at the Beachfest Emancipation Celebration and we’re certain to keep the cup — double win!”

Event promoter Andrew Holmes supports St George’s “all the way”.

“I have lived all my life in Pembroke, however, always been fond of the East End and the Wellington Oval. Oh, and I bleed blue,” he said.

Rebecca Hanson, owner of TABS Bermuda shorts, said her choice of which team to support came pretty easily.

“My favourite team is St George’s. I support them because I live in the East End of the Island. Blue and blue all de way,” she added.

Pamela Barit Nolan, of the charity ISIS Foundation, picked her team after making some close connections with people in the West End.

She said: “Having grown up in Warwick and being childhood friends with many Southampton Raynors, I have always cheered for Somerset and made sure to have lots of red and blue around at this time of year.

“I think Cup Match is a great celebration for Bermuda — remembering our past but also coming out into the present as a community; playing some serious sport but having some fun too!”

Entertainer Mike Hind has always supported St George’s.

“I am St George’s all the way, always have been, always will be,” he said. “My family is from ‘round there, both sides. For me, there’s never been a question who to support!”

Elaine Williams, the executive director of the Centre on Philanthropy, is also a “fiercely loyal” St George’s fan.

“The funny thing about it is that I don’t even know why I support St George’s,” she said. “My father (Austin “Toes” Simons) actually played Cup Match for Somerset, so I am certain that he would not be pleased.

“I have rather enjoyed the verbal challenges to the Somerset fans and sincerely hope that the St George’s team doesn’t let me down.”

Photographer Nigel Richardson grew up supporting Somerset. “I was born Cup Match weekend. I remember as a youngster going to the annual game with my family as my uncle used to play in the classic.

“Also, every so often my birthday would fall on the second day of Cup Match which made attending even more special,” he said.

DJ Jason Sukdeo, aka D’General, said his mother’s ties to St George’s led to his support of the team.

“I was brought up in Warwick, so I had no allegiance to either side,” he said.

“My mom is for St George’s, and dad is for Somerset. I went with mom’s team. Mom cooked the food, [so it] just seemed logical to side with her if I wanted to eat during the holidays!”
