Retailers preparing for extra demand

Bermuda’s major food suppliers have brought in and expect to sell a lot of merchandise for the Cup Match weekend.

Food retailers expect not only a big weekend but also anticipate a big month of July for sales. Consequently, they have ordered extra quantities.

Cup Match normally sees increased demand for food as a result of celebrations and festivities taking place Island wide.

Charles Gosling, vice-president and managing director of Gosling Brothers Ltd said: “In terms of beer sales July is our busiest month, so we have brought a lot in.

“I can’t give exact figures so let’s just say we expect to sell a heck of a lot. The thing about Cup Match is that it’s in the beginning of our summer season so we order accordingly.

“Most suppliers require four weeks from making an order to delivery.

“It takes that long for shipments to come in so we can’t give expectations for just one weekend.”

Allan Hughes, the sales manager of Butterfield and Vallis said: “It’s the busiest week of the year for us.

“Across the board there’s increased demand from restaurants. It’s a busy period like Christmas.”

Richard Ricca, spokesman for Butterfield and Vallis Consumer Products division, said: “We bring in a lot of extra snack food such as crisps, a lot of fresh meat.

“The fresh produce has been absolutely huge because people are eating so much better these days.”
