Honouring Somerset's past

Past Somerset Cup Match captains are being recognised in the form of banners on telephone poles along the road from George's Bay Road near White Hill to Watford Bridge.

Sandys Parish Council's Programmes Committee Co-ordinator, Charlene Webb came up with the theme — “Honouring Past and Present Cup Match Captains of Somerset Cricket Club”.

Ms Webb said the idea came from what St George's did last year, and this year, with some of their former players in the town, with a project honouring the 26 past and current captains.

“The concept started out with those who are living and then we quickly realised that we can honour the deceased as well,” said Ms Webb.

“There are 25 ex-captains and we also put Jekon Edness [current captain] there as one day he will be an ex-captain as well. All the response has been very favourable, especially from the families and the Somerset Cricket Club.

“We spoke with Molly Simons, the club executive at Somerset and she was all in favour.”

Getting the photos presented a challenge with St George's Cup Match captains.

“It became a real history project,” said Ms Webb. “Every other year when Cup Match is up at Somerset we decide to do a bit of decorating and this year decided to give Somerset folks a bit of information. If Somerset keep the cup I'm pretty sure it will stay up for the month of August.”

Ms Webb is appreciative of the financial support received from the families of the former captains, as well as others such as Ms Simons and Radell Tankard for many hours searching the archives for photos.

“I want to give special thanks also to Junius Burrows Plumbing Company, Department of Youth and Sport, Corporation of Hamilton, BDA Flag, Mr Eugene Woods who has the history of Cup Match 'down to a tee', and BELCO, especially Craig Brangman and Jamel Salaam, and all Sandys Parish Council members who worked around the clock to decorate Sandys parish in order to add a bit of cheer for everyone,” Ms Webb said.

“Cup Match is a cultural celebration in Bermuda, when East and West unite to celebrate Emancipation Day and Somers Day. The SPC appreciates the positive comments and the support from local residents and tourists alike as we prepare for Cup Match in Somerset.”
