Heptathlete Smith on a high after PB finale

Shianne Smith threw the javelin 38.24 metres before recording a personal best in the 800 metres that brought her Games to a close

Shianne Smith, the Bermuda heptathlete, finished the Commonwealth Games on a high note after setting a personal best in her final event, the 800 metres.

Smith, the first Bermudian women to compete in the heptathlon at a major Games, came fifth in her race in time of 2min 14.73sec, shattering her previous best of 2:15.37.

The 28-year-old, who also came fifth in the javelin with a throw of 38.24 metres, placed eighth overall in the heptathlon with 5,187 points from her seven events.

“The 800 has always been my strong event, so I felt hopeful going into the race,” Smith said.

“It was a good way to finish with a PB, although I’m my own worst critic, so I’m never really happy with what I do.

“There’s plenty for me to build on from these Games, although I do feel like I need a little break to recharge my batteries.

“Overall it was a great experience, even if I didn’t quite do as well as I had wanted.”

Smith, who is based in Montpellier, insisted that she had not felt fazed by the big occasion nor by competing against some of the world’s top heptathletes.

“In the heptathlon I never feel like I’m competing against the other competitors; I’m always feel like I’m only competing against myself,” she said.

“Since I’ve been based in France, I’ve been able to compete against some of the top Commonwealth heptathletes on a regular basis and that really helps.”

In today’s morning session Smith finished tenth in the long jump, posting a leap of 5.24 metres.
