Smith has ground to make up in heptathlon

Shianne Smith, the Bermuda heptathlete, lies in ninth position overall with 3,030 points after four events at the Commonwealth Games.

Smith, the first Bermudian woman to compete in the heptathlon at a major Games, made a solid start in the morning session, finishing third in her 100 metres hurdles heat in a time of 14.95sec, before placing eleventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.54.

At the start of the evening session, Smith, 28, was positioned tenth out of 12 competitors on 1,514 points.

The Montpellier-based athlete added another 650 points to her tally in the shot, placing ninth, with a best a throw of 11.83 metres.

In her final event of the evening, Smith had to settle for second in her 200 heat in 25.23 after being pipped at the line by Makeba Alcide, of St Lucia.

Off in the distance in the medal positions going into today’s long jump, javelin and 800 metres is Brianne Theisen-Eaton, of Canada, on 3,939. Jessica Zelinka, her compatriot, is second on 3,744, with Jessica Taylor, of England, third on 3,520.
