Rawlins brought back to earth in Guyana

Rawlins’s lone wicket in seven overs cost 53 runs

Half of Bermuda’s contingent saw action as the ICC Americas team suffered a chastening defeat by Trinidad & Tobago on the opening day of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-19 One-Day Tournament in Guyana yesterday.

Trinidad made a massive 254 all out in 48.3 overs after being inserted and the target proved to be far too much for an ICC Americas team that are made up of players from the United States, Canada and Bermuda.

Delray Rawlins, the all-rounder who so impressed for St George’s at Cup Match, was given a rough introduction by the Trinidadians, his seven overs left-arm spin going for 53.

The 16-year-old did manage to collect a wicket, though, dismissing Camillo Carimbocas, caught by fellow Bermudian Onias Bascome for 23.

It was Bascome, a reserve for St George’s after playing as a colt in 2013, who had more success with the ball, even though he, too, was expensive. But the medium-pace bowler would be pleased with a return of three for 35 from five overs as Trinidad sought to up the ante at the death.

Amir Jangoo led the Trinidad batting with 95, which proved far too much the ICC Americas, who were skittled for 91.

Rawlins, who batted as high as No 5 for St George’s at Somerset Cricket Club, making an unbeaten 54 in the first innings, had to contend himself with a slot at No 10 yesterday, by which time the game was well and truly done. He made two.

Bascome, who batted two places higher, finished unbeaten on nine. Nikhil Dutta, the captain from Canada, was their top scorer with 22.

Alex Dore, a late replacement for Tre Manders, and Micah Simons are the other Bermudians in the ICC Americas squad and could be expected to play some part today when they face hosts Guyana at Bourda, the Test venue.
