Good things come in small packages and Oxford Cottage at number two, Sharon Lane is an example of the adage.

This cottage, on the western edge of Hamilton, was built in the 1940s using solid stone and good wood for the floors, with high ceilings and a generous supply of large windows.

The current owners have renovated it completely within the last two years, taking down partitioning to open up the living spaces, putting in generously proportioned bathrooms, fitting out a brand new and generous kitchen area with top-end appliances and quartz counter tops, and including a bright, modern laundry, work shop as well as creating a storage area in a huge attic that runs the length of the house.

Window frames and much of the woodwork are painted a clean white. And, at the same time, the house was completely rewired and replumbed.

Today, it is a completely contemporary home with all the charm of a vintage cottage of that era.

The owners, who are interested in either selling or renting the property, also added bricked verandas around the house, and at the front it is topped with a roof complete with ceiling fan creating what amounts to an additional room for summer living and dining that looks out into a mature and private garden filled with flowering trees and plants.

While compact, the cottage seems spacious thanks to its high ceilings which keep the temperature down in the summer time. Should it get warm, though, it is completely air-conditioned.

Realtor Barbara Lee with The Kitson Group of Companies, explained: “Oxford Cottage has been reconfigured to open it right up.” The kitchen and living/dining room are now open plan, giving a large and comfortable living space.

The original flooring runs through much of the house, infusing still more warmth, including the living area where there is a working fire place. A cosy study lies just off the living room, with a large enough access from the living area to provide a sense of still more space. White painted book shelves tie it together with the rest of house, with the white painted wood of the window frames and other details. Although the house is on a small lot on the edge of the city, the hedging and trees that surround it give the impression of much more green space.

The master bedroom has a sense of privacy and cosiness, and features a built-in closet with plenty of hanging space and drawers. The master bathroom has plantation shutters for privacy and a large, glass-encased shower A second bedroom, situated in a corner room in the house, gives the impression of space with its high ceilings and two large catty-cornered windows looking out onto the porch and into the greenery of the garden.

The sense you get as you arrive from the a wide brick driveway through the tidy, verdant garden at Oxford Cottage, is of a property that has an immediate send of peace and tranquility. And that feeling remains with you for as long as you are there.
