Augustus tied for fifteenth

Decent start: Augustus

Daniel Augustus continued to impress at the 83rd Rhode Island Open in East Providence yesterday.

The Bermuda professional signed off with a one-under-par 69 that left him tied for fifteenth with a total of two-under-par 138 heading into today’s final round of the 54-hole tournament being played at the 6,260-yard, par 70 Agawam Hunt layout.

It was the second straight day that Augustus entered the clubhouse at one-under-par having also carded a 69 during the opening round.

He was four shots under par with three holes left to play but lost momentum after making bogey at the short par three 16th and par four 18th.

It was a cruel twist to a round that saw Augustus birdie three holes on the front nine to make the turn at two under for the round and three under for the tournament. He also birdied the short par three 11th.

Augustus’s remaining bogey arrived at the par three, second hole.

The former Bermuda Open winner’s 36-hole total left him three strokes above the cut that was made at 141.

However, the same could not be said for compatriot Camiko Smith who failed to make the cut despite firing a one-under-par 69 yesterday.

An opening round eight-over-par 78 left Smith with too much to do in order to stand any chance of progressing to the final round.

However, the Bermuda professional made a real fist of it, rolling in three birdies before ultimately coming up short with a two-round total of seven over par, 147.

Troy Pare, with a score of 132, topped the leaderboard by a solitary shot over nearest rival Ricky Werenski with 18 holes left to play for the $5,000 winner’s purse.

Also competing is multiple Gosling’s Invitational winner and Champions Tour player, Patrick Horgan III, who won the 1994 Rhode Island Open.

Horgan was tied for tenth at three-under-par 137, a shot clear of Bermuda’s Augustus.
