ICC Americas finish winless

Simons bowled four overs for 17 runs

The ICC Americas team closed out their participation in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-19 One-Day Tournament in Guyana with a 150-run defeat by the Leeward Islands at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.

The Americas, who ended the tournament without a win, faced the prospect of chasing a huge total after Shaquille Martina and Ross Powell put on 123 for the first wicket, with Martina leading the way with 60 and Powell contributing 34.

Delray Rawlins, the sixth bowler used by the Americas, broke the partnership and briefly brought the Americas back into the game when he claimed three quick wickets to make it 123 for three.

The left-arm spinner trapped Powell leg-before, then had Martina caught by substitute fielder Alex Dore and then bowled wicketkeeper Jaeel Clarke for a duck on his way to figures of three for 38 from ten overs.

However, a 90-run stand for the fourth wicket between No 3 bat Kacey Carty, who scored 59 not out, and Dion West, who hit 51, put up the 200 before West was run out.

Micah Simons, the first change, bowled four overs for 17 runs and Onias Bascome six overs for 28 as the Americas used eight bowlers in their bid to slow the scoring.

The Americas never recovered from a bad start which saw Nikhil Dutta bowled by Alzarri Joseph in the first over. Arsh Buch, the other opener, was then run out for one before captain Trevis Ross and Vibhav Altekar tried to rebuild the innings, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Bascome scoring 13, Rawlins eight and Simons five before Farhan Malik offered some resistance in the tailend with 18 as he and Simons added 21 for the ninth wicket.

Joseph was the pick of the Leewards bowlers with five for 47 from 7.4 overs while captain Jeremiah Louis took two for 19 to help lead them to their first victory.

One round of matches remain in the tournament but the ICC Americas have their bye today after finishing their six matches with five losses and a rainout.

Yesterday, Trinidad & Tobago beat Barbados by 58 runs, scoring 204 for seven in their 50 overs and then restricting Barbados to 146 after being 109 for two at one stage. Jeremy Solozano, the captain, was the top scorer for Trinidad and Tobago with 56. For Barbados, opener Nicholas Kirton scored 45 and Akil Greenidge 43, the pair putting on 86 for the second wicket.

Guyana’s batsmen hammered the Windward Islands bowlers for 276 for seven on their way to a 114-run win to remain on top of the standings.

Shimron Hetmyer led the batting with 86 while Keemo Paul scored 51 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul 43. The Windwards replied with 162 with Balchan Baldeo claiming three for 35.
