Condescending and arrogant

July 27, 2014

Dear Sir,

The recent statement made by Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB) that (a) PRC’s are likely to be mainly white (b) that they will want Bermudian Status (c) that they will vote, and (d) that they will vote OBA, is condescending and arrogant in the extreme.

One might as well not have an election every four or five years, but simply ask CURB to determine what political party should be awarded the Government based upon historical events.

From time to time, people quote Dr Martin Luther King and the speech he gave in August 1963. Maybe it’s appropriate to remind CURB in particular of one thing he said:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character”.

Dr King was, of course, making that point in the context of being an unprotected minority, as whites are today in Bermuda.

As a white Bermudian, I am sick and tired of being judged by the colour of my skin, by a majority race. Sick and tired of being told “how” I will do something in the future, based upon how an ancestor behaved historically.

Sick and tired of listening to a majority continue to rely upon history to justify their rhetoric, because they have nothing else. Sick and tired of the assumption that my character is the same as those who went before me.

Maybe the time has arrived where we need legislation here in Bermuda that sets out to protect minorities, ie non-blacks, as they have in the UK. Maybe it’s time to have a march of those in favour of giving PRC’s Bermudian Status.

Maybe it’s time for non-blacks to stand up and be counted within the context of the 21st Century and the desire to take the Island forward for all Bermudians. It certainly isn’t going to happen if left to CURB and those who think as they do.

DISGUSTED WHITE

BERMUDIAN
