City Hall service to mark First World War

A memorial service marking the 100th anniversary of the start of hostilities in the First World War will be held today.

City of Hamilton Mayor Graeme Outerbridge will perform a commemorative service on the steps of City Hall at 12pm, and the public are welcome to attend.

He will read a proclamation focusing on the role Bermudians played in the War, while the Last Post — a traditional final salute to the fallen — will be performed by Major Barrett St Vincent Dill.

Prayers will be led by the Bishop of Bermuda and Chewstick will contribute poetry readings.

The service is expected for last for about 30 to 40 minutes.

Governor George Fergusson and his wife Margaret are due to attend, as is US Consul Robert Settje and Lillian Levon, a widow of a veteran of both World Wars.

Bermuda and City flags will be flown at half-mast to mark the occasion, and others are encouraged to do the same as a gesture of respect and remembrance.

The service will be moved to the City Hall foyer if the weather is poor.
