Scraders handed flag-bearer honour

Carrying the flag: Scraders

Kyrah Scraders, the Bermuda middle distance runner, has been given the honour of carrying the Island’s flag in Saturday’s opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

The Berkeley Institute student, who is competing in the 800 metres, is one of seven athletes representing Bermuda at the Games.

Judy Simons, the president of the Bermuda Olympic Association, said: “We congratulate Kyrah on being selected as our country flag bearer at the opening ceremonies. She is certainly deserving and an excellent ambassador for Bermuda. We wish her, and the entire team, the best of luck.”

Swimmer Jesse Washington, high jumper Jahnai Perinchief, sprinter Kionje Somner, triathletes Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith and sailor Ceci Wollmann are the remaining athletes that make up Bermuda’s team.

The Youth Olympic Games, involving athletes ages 14 to 18, will take place August 16 to 28.
