Law firm Appleby has announced its 2014 scholarship and bursary recipients. The partners of Appleby have awarded scholarships and bursaries to qualified Bermudian applicants for more than 35 years.

The firm’s Legal Education Scholarship, valued at $30,000, is awarded to Korin Knights, currently studying at the University of Wales via Kaplan Holborn College in London to pursue an LLB. Mr Knights is also a summer law student intern at Appleby, gaining experience in the firm’s Private Client and Trusts, and Corporate and Commercial departments.

Appleby’s Legal Award and Bursaries, given each year to Bermudian students who are pursuing legal studies and intending to return to Bermuda to practise law, are awarded this year to the following students: Luisa Olander, currently enrolled at BPP University in London pursuing an LPC, is the recipient of the firm’s Legal Award; and Sophia Stefanatto, who will pursue an LPC at the University of Law in September 2014, and Melissa Spurling, who will pursue an MA (Legal Practice Course with business) at BPP University in Cambridge in the fall and is currently a summer law student intern at Appleby, are both Bursary recipients.

The Appleby/Berkeley Institute Scholarship is awarded to both Waverley Moran and Precious Smith. Ms Moran is attending the University of King’s College in Halifax this September to pursue a degree in Psychology and Theatre studies, and Ms Smith is attending The University of Buckingham in the UK this October to pursue a Bachelor of Laws. The Appleby/Berkeley Institute Bursary is awarded to Lady Carmela Robinson, who is attending Temple University in Philadelphia this month to pursue studies in Insurance.

The firm’s partnership with The Berkeley Institute began in 1995 to honour their common goal of excellence at school and at work. Berkeley graduating students are eligible to apply for the Appleby/The Berkeley Institute Scholarship each year who are seeking to continue their education in Bermuda or abroad, at either the Grade 12/13 or Associates Degree level.

Bermuda managing partner Kiernan Bell said: “This year’s scholarship and bursary recipients are a stellar group of academic and community-minded young Bermudians who are sure to make solid and long-lasting contributions to Bermuda’s professional industry and community.

“On behalf of all the Bermuda partners of Appleby, we congratulate each of them for their achievements and we look forward to seeing their futures evolve by leaps and bounds.”
