Jennifer Looby has been awarded the 2014 RenaissanceRe/Nusum Undergraduate Scholarship.

Miss Looby, a Bermuda College graduate, will be attending Kaplan Holborn College/University of London this fall, to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Law. Now in its eighth year, the 2014 scholarship is titled the RenaissanceRe/Nusum Undergraduate Scholarship in honour of Ms Maureen Nusum’s memory and contributions to the company.

RenRe CEO Kevin O’Donnell said: “Two of our corporate values at RenaissanceRe are focus and integrity, and our scholarship recipient this year embodies both. Jennifer has earned our respect — and the respect of many in our community — for her dedication to her chosen field and for her strength of character. In that regard, Maureen Nusum, whom we are also honouring, would have been very proud of her.”

Miss Looby’s commitment to studying law began with obtaining a Certificate in Law through a University of London course offered at Bermuda College, after which she transferred to the University of London External Programme. While continuing her studies through e-learning, she worked full-time as a Law Researcher and Court Associate at the Supreme Court of Bermuda, for the Chief Justice of Bermuda, Court of Appeal Judges and Puisne Judges. Jennifer has also worked for the Rosedon Hotel, where she won Young Person with Most Promise as part of the annual Visitor Industry Partnership’s VIP Excellence Award.

She has been an active volunteer for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre for a number of years, organising fundraising events along with her mother, a breast cancer survivor.

In addition, she has mentored young adults for over seven years. Throughout her middle and high school years, Jennifer has been recognised for various leadership positions. After a string of successes in public speaking and debating, she won the first David Allen Memorial Competition, becoming the first Junior Minister of Tourism for Bermuda.

She represented her country at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation Competition and Conference. She also led her team to victory as captain, winning the first Minister’s Debate Challenge.

The recipient of the RenaissanceRe Scholarship is selected by a committee of Bermudians from across the organisation. Criteria for selection include academic excellence, demonstrated leadership experience, and community engagement and service. The award is valued at $25,000 per year for up to four years.
