Romaine feeling buoyant about Bay’s chances

High hopes: Bailey's Bay player/coach Romaine

Irving Romaine, the Bailey’s Bay coach, is optimistic about his team’s chances of dethroning cup holders Cleveland County in tomorrow’s Eastern Counties second-round match at Sea Breeze Oval.

The challengers have made three changes to the team that lost the cup to St David’s in the second round at Lord’s last year.

Jordan Smith, a 16-year-old colt, Tre Manders and Tre Govia have replaced Christino Smith, Burton Outerbridge and Azendea Furbert, who has been named as a reserve for tomorrow’s game. Bay’s line-up boasts depth in both the bowling and batting and according to coach Romaine is more than capable of rising for the big occasion.

“We have a very good team and if we come to the party and play well we should win the game,” Romaine said. “Cricket is a funny game but if we come to play, and mother nature holds up, we should do well on the day.”

Bay have three options with the new ball, with those duties likely to fall to Lateef Trott, Kyle Hodsoll or Ryan Steede.

The challenger’s seam attack also boasts Stephen Outerbridge, the captain, who can be called upon to toss down a few overs with the older, softer ball.

Bay’s bowling attack also includes off spin bowlers Rodney Trott, the vice-captain, Cal Dill, Smith and part-time spin bowler Manders who can turn the ball both ways,

The host side’s batting order includes the in-form Terryn Fray and Manders who shared in a 151-run second-wicket partnership that carried champions Somerset to the brink of victory against rivals St George’s in Cup Match.

Much will also be riding on Outerbridge, the captain, who scored 116 against Cleveland when the two rivals met in the competition in the first-round last season, and vice-captain Trott.

“It is a well-balanced team,” Romaine added. “We chose a team that can bat, bowl and field and it’s a good team.”

While Romaine is confident Bay can reclaim the spoils, he admits that his team’s task will not be easy against a Cleveland side that raised eyebrows after handing St David’s a 147-run loss in the first round.

“I have the utmost respect for Cleveland,” Romaine said.

“The time we won the cup from them [2012] it had been given to them because St David’s boycotted the competition.

“But they have earned it this year fair and square and when you earn something you appreciate it more, so it will be difficult to wrest the cup out of their hands.”

Bailey’s Bay: Stephen Outerbridge (captain), Rodney Trott (vice-captain), Sinclair Smith (wicketkeeper), Terryn Fray, Tre Manders, Tre Govia, Kyle Hodsoll, Lateef Trott, Ryan Steede, Cal Dill, Jordan Smith (colt). Reserves: Jermaine Usher, Azendea Furbert, Dage Minors, Jomei Bean-Lindo.
