Member blasts BIU dues rise

An angry member has blasted bosses at the Bermuda Industrial Union for ‘feathering their own nests while my income is ravaged’.

In a strongly-worded letter to The Royal Gazette, the BIU member, who asked to remain anonymous, expresses displeasure at an increase in the weekly dues, which will rise from $12 to $14 on September 1, and could raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the BIU’s coffers.

While acknowledging that $2 a week does not seem much at first glance, the member’s anger is centred on the arbitrary nature of the decision, and calculates that the 16.5 percent increase comes ‘while the executives enjoy their bloated salaries and the workers languish in wage freezes’.

Where, the member asks, was the consultation the BIU is normally so fond of, in this decision, which was made at the Special Delegate Conference recently.

Last night, Chris Furbert, the president of the BIU, told The Royal Gazette he would address the matter at a press conference, either today or tomorrow.
