Lock arms for the good of the country

August 7, 2014

Dear Sir,

How refreshing it was to read the commentary provided by Canon James Francis on August 6, concerning the atmosphere of never ending demonstrations and the very vitriolic tone of anti government sentiment. This in no way deprives our citizens to dissent against what they feel is wrong in peaceful marches in a democratic country. It was most pleasing however that this most respected clergyman weighed in on what I believe is the right side of all the issues he supports.

It took some bravado for him to go counter stream to views that some think is the popular will of “the people” if they can amass 1500 marchers, this is wrong headed thinking just by doing the simple math.

Reverend Francis stood for Christian principles as should be expected without partisan bias and making a courageous call for proper public behaviour and respect for authority for those that you disagree with.

There is no place for racist signs demonising one race as having a monopoly on insanity! We have no compunction to condemn perceived or real racism if the offending racial group is of one pigment but if it is of another we must be sympathetic and understanding of past hurts and offences.

The call for people of good will to come together to hammer out our differences in a calm and reasoned manner is right and constructive for us all. It now appears that the democratic election of a majority government is no longer desirable as the best method to determine what is the will of “the people”.

The expressed desire to remove those entrusted to lead and make unpopular and difficult choices for the well being of all of us now seems to no longer resonate with rational and sensible thinking. This country could be on its way to economic melt down if we do not accept the remedy that is bitter but not fatal.

Now that a man of the cloth with demonstrated credentials of paper and good ministry from the pulpit and exemplary conduct has entered the minefield of the culture and the public square of commentary on racial and political issues he will get his nose bloodied for sure. Welcome to the fray good Christian soldier, your smooth ride and most favourable affection previously enjoyed may come to an abrupt end!

The call for a calm and reasoned approach to our challenges going forward is good and appreciated by many I’m sure. Well done Rev Francis looking forward to hearing more and most especially other Christian soldiers.

The silent majority must make its voice heard even in the face of the most vitriolic name calling and repudiation on talk radio by those who bristle when they do not share your views. No holds barred personal attacks is the weapon of choice in this venomous theatre of war that seeks to demolish all opposing opinions.

People of good will must lock arms for the good of the country. Thank you once again Rev Francis. Now then if you are of the opinion still that the One Bermuda Alliance must go please take heart, there will be another general held at the end of their term.
