Sun, sea, and sandcastles

Sand sculptors will get the chance to show off their skills at Horseshoe Beach later this month.

For the 19th annual sand sculpture competition is set to take place on Saturday, August 30.

And organisers the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation are to hold two clinics this weekend to ensure competitors are prepared for the big day.

“This event has grown in participation and popularity and has proven to be a highly-anticipated weekend of fun for residents and visitors,” Department director Norbert Simons said.

The event was started almost 20 years ago by the Institute of Bermuda Architects and spearheaded by Nicky Gurret. It has since grown to become a summer fixture.

The pre-competition clinic offering tips and techniques on sand sculpting will be held on Saturday and Sunday at Horseshoe Bay between 5pm and 6pm.

Registration for the competition is free and there are four categories — families, children aged under 12, teenagers and the open section, for companies, organisations and visitors, with prizes on offer for the best sculptures.
