Kaylah Ming defeated Lauren Way yesterday in the girls’ under-14 round-robin competition at the Highland Spring Junior Open Tennis Tournament at Pomander Gate.

Ming had no difficulty in the first set, taking it 6-0. Way, coming off a trip to the Cayman Islands with Bermuda’s Under-15 women’s football team, proved difficult to put away for Ming, jumping to an early lead in the second set.

The two traded games until Ming finally pushed ahead for good, winning the second set 6-3.

“It was a lot more challenging than I thought it would have been,” said Ming, who won the summer under-14 girls’ singles title at the Bank of Bermuda ITF Junior Circuit.

“She hit a lot of good shots but I just pushed through and did my best.”

“I feel like I can win it,” Ming added, who finished second in her age group last year.

In boys’ under-16 action, Nick Lines defeated William Way 6-3, 6-2, and Moziah Selassie beat Scott Redmond 6-1, 6-2. In boys’ under-12 competition, Amir Thomas claimed victory over Lorenzo Durrant-Lucarini 6-3, 6-1. In girls under-12s, Imani Phillips beat Alexcie Burrows 6-0, 6-1.
