Patton still firmly in podium picture

Campbell Patton, the Bermuda youth sailor, remains thick in the hunt for honours at the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championship in Nova Scotia.

The teenager sits in second place in the overall standings, two points adrift of the leader Connor Mraz, of the United States, after eight races of the 15-race series and the first of two throwouts.

Patton led the 91-boat racing fleet going into the one and only race contested yesterday because of light winds but fell slightly off the pace after finishing sixth.

The promising youngster has managed four top five finishes so far, including a first in the second race.

Patton is one of seven Royal Bermuda Yacht Club youth sailors competing at the regatta.

Also holding his own is Micah Raynor who was eighth after as many races with four top-ten finishes including a first in the third race.

In 25th is Jordan Etemadi, George Buckley is in 31st, Felix Cutler is in 49th and Sebastian Kempe is placed 52nd. Further down the leaderboard are Teji Simons and Zakai Wolff in 72nd and 74th.

The regatta, which runs from August 16 to 22, is being hosted by the Lunenburg Yacht Club and contested for on the waters of Mahone Bay.

Elsewhere in Canada, Bermuda secured two of the podium places up for grabs at the CORK International Optimist Regatta held in Kingston, Ontario this month.

Winning the silver medal was Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club sailor Adam Larson with club stablemate Tayte Stefaniuk claiming the bronze.

Larson finished five-points behind winner Hayden Earl, of the United States, after discarding his worst score.

Mikey Wollmann, whose sister Cecilia is presently competing at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, also impressed with a fifth-place finish.

Felix Cutler, who is presently competing at the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championship, placed 20th.

Meanwhile, local pair Kalin Hillier and Cameron Pimentel produced respectable showings in the Laser full rig at the CORK OCR and Sail Canada Senior National Championships in Kingston, Ontario.

Hillier, who won a bronze medal at last summer’s NatWest Island Games in Laser Radial Rig placed 15th among the fleet of 52-boats ahead of Pimentel, who topped the Laser fleet during this year’s Bermuda Race Week, in 24th.
