Complaint about rats at trash-filled garden

Unkempt: The community garden on Trimingham Lane appears to be growing over, after its’ care-takers have left the garden neglected for some time.

A trash-littered communal garden in Paget has residents questioning who’s in charge, as the build-up of waste after Cup Match allegedly draws vermin to the area.

“There’s a huge amount of trash, bottles and cans from the bin that’s overflowed, and all manner of waste lying around — it just seems like nobody’s making an effort,” a frustrated resident whose property adjoins the gardens told The Royal Gazette.

“I took a walk there just a few days ago and I could hear rats scuttling away in the hedge. I got eaten alive by mosquitos.

“I’ve lived close by for years and there just seems to be no supervision or maintenance any more.”

The organic gardening area, secluded by hedges, lies to the southeast of the Crow Lane roundabout in the corner of Berry Hill Road and Trimingham Road.

According to the resident, it is leased to “a variety of people who grow vegetables — there are long-term people who genuinely work hard, but the majority are not being mindful”.

She added: “If anyone says that it’s summertime and no crops are being grown, then my argument is that they should be using the time to clean up.

“After a while, people think this is normal. I have memories of this garden and its entrance looking immaculate.”

She said the Government-owned land should be “tidied up and maintained or the garden taken away from the tenants, or given to tenants who will keep it tidy”.

A Parks spokesman yesterday responded: “The property is in the National Park system.

“It is not leased to the gardeners, it is managed by a committee, and each member is responsible for his/her own garden.”
