Downpours put paid to beach tennis

Inclement weather had put paid to this week's beach tennis event

The ITF Bermuda Beach Tennis tournament scheduled to start at Horseshoe Bay today has been cancelled because of high winds and heavy rain.

Tony Brannon, the organiser, said that the poor weather meant they were left with little choice but to axe the event, which is part of the maiden Triangle of Beach Tennis with New York and Puerto Rico.

“It’s with great regret that due to the weather conditions, it’s impossible to set up and create the tournament for Tuesday and Wednesday,” Brannon said.

Brannon said that he had called the Weather Service who informed him that the conditions are expected to deteriorate.

“There will be no spectators, and the sea surge, winds and rain will make play impossible,” he added.

Bermuda has been experiencing by downpours and thunderstorms over the past few days.

A Thunderstorm Advisory is in effect, and the Bermuda Weather Service has said that Tropical Storm Cristobal is a potential threat to the Island.

The storm’s closest point of approach to Bermuda is forecast to be 165 nautical miles to the north-west at 9pm tomorrow.

The Triangle of Beach Tennis started in New York last week, with Puerto Rico scheduled to hold the final event from August 29 to 31.

The winners of each tournament collect $10,000, with ITF rankings points also on the line.
